The Union’s road trip continues as they travel to New York to take on Eastern Conference rival Red Bulls this Sunday.
The Red Bulls currently sit in the sixth and final playoff spot in the East with 41 points and a record of 12-10-5. The Union sit a ways out of the playoff picture, sitting tenth in the East with 32 points and a record of 8-8-12. The Red Bulls will be fighting for vital points to keep them above the playoff line as the Montreal Impact look to close the five-point gap.
This season, the two teams have played each other three times. Both teams have a win, and tied the third matchup. The one draw was in the US Open Cup, where the Union ended up losing in PKs. The match should be an exciting game to watch, as it has been pretty even among the two rivals every time they’ve met this season.
One downside is that the Red Bulls are 7-1-1 against the Union when they’re home at Red Bull Arena. Hopefully the Union can defy those unlikely odds and pull out some points coming down the stretch of the season. Another reason this could prove to be an exciting match is the possible matchup of the two national team players; Alejandro Bedoya and Sacha Kljestan. They are both talented and experienced midfielders who play together on the USMNT. Another player to look out for is the Red Bulls goal scorer Bradley Wright-Phillips who has scored six goals in his last seven games. The Union need to make sure they keep him in check if they want to win this game on Sunday.
