This is most certainly not the time for the Flyers to hit a cold streak. With only three games left in the regular season, Philadelphia is struggling to secure a spot in the playoffs.
After dropping an important game against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins, the Flyers looked forward to Wednesday night as they played the Detroit Red Wings, who are also in the hunt to secure a playoff spot. Unfortunately, they could not do the job as goaltender Jimmy Howard and the Red Wings kept Philadelphia off the score sheet in a 3-0 shutout.
Philadelphia, who still currently holds the final wild card spot, is tied with the Boston Bruins with 91 points. Here is the kicker: The Bruins have one less game to play in the regular season, one of which is against the Red Wings. This makes tonight’s matchup versus the Toronto Maple Leafs not just any game. If the Flyers can defeat the Leafs, and the Red Wings can defeat the Bruins, this will drastically increase the Flyers playoff chances.
In other words, the team we were rooting against yesterday is the team we have to root for tonight in order for the Flyers playoff hopes to stay alive. With that being said, Philadelphia also needs to defeat Toronto tonight and take that momentum to Saturday against the Penguins. The key for this Flyers team is to treat every game like it is their last.
The Flyers will most likely depend on goaltender Steve Mason as they approach the final three games of the season.
