This past week when the Flyers took on the Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was in attendance scouting the game.
Right away every Flyers and Jets fan went to Twitter and started tweeting about what big trade was imminent between the Flyers and Jets. Unfortunately for some Flyers fans, there’s really no big trade coming between the Jets and Flyers any time soon.
If you look at the needs of both teams, there simply is no realistic trade that could occur between the two that mutually helps both. Contrary to popular belief, the Jets are most likely not interested in Luke Schenn. As of right now the Jets have three right handed defensemen in Jacob Trouba, Dustin Byfuglien, and Tyler Myers. With none of those three defenseman deserving a 3rd pairing role, the last thing the Jets need is a right handed defenseman right now, which is what Luke Schenn is.
As for other speculation regarding a deal that the Flyers would get Dustin Byfuglien in some trade with the Jets is not true either. The Flyers simply do not have the cap room unless the Jets would take back the likes of either Andy MacDonald or Vinny Lecavalier. With those two contracts ranking among the top in the league in most unwanted, the Jets won’t take them in a trade by any means, meaning the Flyers are unlikely to get Dustin Byfuglien. As for other speculation regarding Brayden Schenn in a deal to the Jets, that is also unlikely, just not as much. The Jets could use a young top 6 forward like Brayden Schenn, however they don’t really have the pieces to get a deal done with the Flyers. The Flyers are looking for young players up front to speed up there rebuild and the Jets don’t really have the pieces to help that process. Right now the Jets are trying to rebuild with youth with players such as Nik Ehlers and Nic Petan who are untradeable. With the Flyers most likely not having any interest (or cap rom) in a Andrew Ladd or Drew Stafford there simply isn’t something realistically the Jets could send back for Brayden. Overall, there most likely isn’t a trade on the horizon with the Jets. It’s also important to know that Kevin Cheveldayoff was the former Blackhawks assistant General Manager and may have been simply scouting someone on the Blackhawks who need to shed some salary.
What do you guys think is going on?
