MLS Save of the Week The Union lost that game 1-0. André Blake was tracking the play to the left when Fagundez shot went in the opposite direction far post. On September 26th, André again playing against New England had an amazing night. Many have referred to the performance as the “André Blake Show.” André rewrote a team record, with 10 saves in one game. Amazingly André Blake was left off the Save of the Week list of nominees that week. An unbelievable snubbing considering the jaw dropping reactions to his saves like the one pictured below.
(Photo, Philly soccer page) Jim Curtin talks about guys having to take advantage of opportunities when they’re given the chance to play on the field. The Keeper did just that and earned a start for the U.S Open Cup. A highlight in the game, Sebastian Le toux added to his goal tally in the U.S Open Cup play with a goal in the 23rd’. Le toux holds the record for modern era goals scored in the Open Cup tournament with 16 goals. André had a good game only allowing one goal by Krisztian Nemeth an excellent curling shot. André Blake was subed out in the last minutes of extra time to give John McCarthy a chance to bring home the game during the penalty shootout. McCarthy was able to block one. Unfortunately Edu and Wenger were unable to convert their attempts.
October 3, the Union played Toronto F.C. André’ Blake had another good performance two unfortunate goals against and a third goal he could do nothing with. He was able to earn two saves and receive a nomination in this weeks goal of the week. MLS Save of The Week . Announced this morning on Mlssoccer.com NYRB keeper Luis Robles won the goal of the week honors with 40.45% of the vote. André Blake came in a close second with 40.29% of the vote. The Jamaican National team coach Winfried Schafer has taken noticed of André Blake’s performances calling the keeper up to the Jamaican National team for a Friendly against South Korea on October 13, 2015. More importantly it seems Coach Jim Curtin has taken noticed to Blake’s recent performances. While speaking to Matthew DeGeorge Delco Times, Matthew DeGeorge after Wednesday’s training session. Coach Curtin sees it like this: He is a guy who has shown that he can be the guy, the No. 1 man Curtin, said Our hope is that in these last two games he can continue to show that and go into the off-season where you have a Generation Adidas goalkeeper and it’s just a great problem that has Naturally solved itself.
So the first overall draft pick in the 2014 MLS Superdraft may become the Philadelphia Union’s 2016 No.1 Goalkeeper. That could be one less decision the future Director of Soccer operations will have to decide. The Union will face the NYRB at Red Bull stadium and then compete against the expansion side Orlando SC at the seasons final home game at PPL Park on October 25th. Then we will have to wait out the off-season for the next chapter in the André Blake Story.
