I really did not want to approach this topic so soon in the season but the Phillies have made it impossible for me to ignore the status of their play. Expectations for 2013 were that they would have at least the opportunity to win a wild card spot or at least be a team that would play for a spot. But to date it looks like they will be lucky to be at .500 by the last game of the season which can only give you a sinking feeling for the near future, 2014.

The questions are already leading us to believe that there needs to be major changes in this organization starting with the manager Charlie Manuel, who’s contract is now under question and if there should be a change in leadership. Well I am of the thought that Charlie has had tremendous success with this team, the all time winning coach of the Phillies but does that give him a pass. NO. He has lost his ability to connect with the players and it is apparent that he does not hold all the players at the same standard, Jimmy Rollins makes comments recently about his goal is to be the leader in team stats, doesn’t sound like a player who is playing for the TEAM. Did Charlie say anything to him, sit him to realign his goals, NO.

The bullpen, how can we be talking about this troubled area again this year. As the year moves along we continue to have major issues with relief, poor control, injuries , inexperienced pitching and worst of all a high priced closer with a bad attitude and no accountability for his poor pitching. $54 million you go out there with a goal to win with a one run lead, really blow the save and take the loss.

Outfield, there seems to be 2 out of 3 positions covered with Brown and Revere both should be healthy and are still young enough to be productive for the foreseeable future, but do we have to have another experiment in right field, Delmon Young, this is an example of Ruben being cheap again sacrificing quality with a guy who is already hurt and has limited defensive skills. Please don’t repeat this next season go out and settle the issue spend the money you have available funds put a quality player in the outfield.

It looks like Chase Utley will get his extension so another old man playing the only consultation is that he has been better with his knees and seems to still be hitting for his average. But what to do with Ruiz, he has had a horrible season between suspension and injuries he has not been able to get his groove. If not a backup catcher then let him go, age and injuries will really plague him in the future which is the real issue with keeping him.

Since we now have time to accept the inevitable that we will be watching other teams play in October then bring up the top minor leaguers and give them the experience they need, Cody Asche, Ethan Martin, Tommy Josephs, Jesse Biddle to name a few potential everyday players. I don’t care what you call it retooling, rebuilding just make changes and utilize the talent and money available. Basic baseball ” see the ball, hit the ball”, hit it hard and often get a more balanced lineup right/left not left, left, left, etc.
