The first eriod began with a Panther ambush. The Panthers controlled play for the first few minutes of the game. Florida took several shots in an aggressive shift, but Bryzgalov held.
Later in the period, the Flers were caught on their heels. Philadelphia left the middle open, and Dimitri Kullikov split the seam to find Jack Skillie. Skillie caught the pas behind the offensive blue line, and skated through the middle to score. His 30 ft snapshot beat Ilya Bryzgalov to give FLorida 1-0 lead.
Mere seconds later, the Flyers went on the power play. Jakub Voracek handled the puck on the outside of the right circle. Voracek took a few seconds, then shot to the low left of Jose Theodore. Theodore was unable to cope, and the Flyers had responded to tie the game 1-1.
Early in the second period, the Flyers scored to take the lead. After a scrap near the Florida net, Matt Read flicked the rebound to the roof, and it hit in off the post. Read has scored four goals this season, all against the Florida Panthers.
However, penalties would come back to haunt Philly. On the Panthers power play, Setphen Weiss scored to tie the game at two. Weiss had been thrown out of the faceoff circle three times prior to the goal. THe score allowed him to make amends for his follies.
The game went through an uneventful overtime, and thus was decided in a shootout. Claude Giroux and Matt Read had their shots saved, and the Panthers scored both to win it. Penalties haunted the Flyers, and cost them the game.
The Flyers fell to 4-6-1, and will host Carolina Saturday, 1:00 PM at the Wells Fargo Center.
