Albany, NY–Things are starting to change for the Phantoms. And it’s not quite a bad thing either.
After squandering the lead late in the 3rd period, the Phantoms were able to beat the Devils in the extra session and get the 3-2 victory.
The Phantoms parent club, the Philadelphia Flyers, haven’t started out the season the way everyone had hopes, losing a tough one Saturday to the Penguins to start the season, and then dropping their second game today in Buffalo. But the Phantoms have done quite the opposite, also winning yesterday 2-1 in Worcester.
Jason Akeson started the scoring off late in the first, a power play goal with 1:55 left in the period, and also added a primary assist on Noebels goal in the second to give the Phantoms a 2-1 lead. But the Phantoms lead wouldn’t hold, as they gave up the tying goal with just over two minutes left in the game.
However, in the shootout, the Phantoms would score three times, with goals by Akeson, McGinn, and Syvret, who sealed the deal in the final frame. The Devils only scored once in the shootout and are now 0-8 overall in shootouts this year, while the Phantoms improved to 3-1.
Cal Heeter, after getting the night off yesterday with Brian Boucher in net, made 25 saves. Despite being on the penalty kill 7 times in the game, the Phantoms gave up just one goal, and outshot Albany 31-27 overall.
The Phantoms next game will be Wednesday, January 23 at 7PM ET against the Connecticut Whale.
