Eagles Guard and 2011 first-round pick Danny Watkins, as well as Wide Receiver/Punt Returner Mardy Gilyard have been ruled out for Monday night’s game in New Orleans with lingering ankle and hamstring injuries, respectively.
Gilyard picked up his injury in Sunday’s game against the Falcons. In his place, Damaris Johnson will once again return punts. Johnson, an undrafted free agent out of Tulsa, was the primary returner to start the season, but was replaced due to a lack of production
Watkins did not practice Thursday or Friday of last week, and thus did not play against Atlanta. Dennis Kelly made his first NFL start, and is in line for his second at a tough place to play in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Marty Mornhinweg noted at his Friday press conference that teams now have game footage of him and can look to attack his weaknesses. Kelly will have to adjust to what teams try to do against him.
In other news, Head Coach Andy Reid will make a game-time decision over whether Safety Nate Allen will play against the Saints. Allen has been bothered by a hamstring injury as well, and is officially listed as questionable on the Eagles’ injury report.
Should Allen not play, David Sims would get the start at Safety alongside Kurt Coleman. Sims was acquired in a trade with Cleveland just before the season opener.
