According to The Inquirer’s Matt Gelb, Juan Samuel has quietly accepted the vacant first base coaching position.

Shortly after the end of the season the Phillies shook up their coaching staff — letting go of Sam Perlozza (1st Base Coach), Pete Mackanin (Bench Coach), and Greg Gross (Hitting Coach). It was announced last week that Ryne Sandberg, Manager of the Phillies’ AAA affiliate Iron Pigs, would takeover at Third Base coach and could possibly supplant Charlie Manuel as manager when the time comes.

Samuel, 51-years old, will be vacating his position as Third Base Coach in favor of Sandberg. Samuel also played in the majors for 16-years, beginning his career with the Phillies in 1983.
